Thousands of residents in Mutituni Ward are set to benefit from improved water access following the commissioning of the Inyooni Kwa Onyango Weir, a landmark water project spearheaded by the County Government of Machakos under the leadership of Governor Wavinya Ndeti.
The transformative project, which directly and indirectly serves more than 10,000 residents, marks a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to enhance water security, support agriculture, and improve livelihoods across Machakos.
With a storage capacity of 30,000 cubic meters, the weir provides a reliable and sustainable water source for approximately 2,500 households in the Mutituni area.
The project incorporates a modern reticulation system connecting two water storage tanks located on either side of the weir, ensuring efficient distribution of water for domestic use.
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Wavinya Ndeti reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to delivering practical and impactful development projects that address the everyday needs of residents.
“This project is more than just a water infrastructure investment; it is a lifeline for our people. Access to clean and reliable water is fundamental to health, economic growth, and dignity. We are committed to ensuring that every community in Machakos enjoys the benefits of sustainable water supply,” said Governor Ndeti.
Beyond domestic consumption, the Inyooni Kwa Onyango Weir is expected to stimulate economic activities within the region. The weir has created an approximately three-kilometer backflow stretch that provides a dependable source of water for livestock and irrigation, enabling farmers to increase agricultural production and strengthen food security.
The project is already opening new opportunities for local farmers, reducing the challenges associated with water scarcity and helping communities build resilience against the effects of climate change.
Residents have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a game changer that will ease the burden of fetching water over long distances while supporting farming and livestock keeping activities that sustain many households.
The commissioning of the weir underscores Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s broader development agenda of investing in critical infrastructure that improves living standards and creates economic opportunities for residents across the county.
As Machakos continues to expand access to water and other essential services, projects such as the Inyooni Kwa Onyango Weir are bringing the county closer to realizing the vision of “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni” ensuring food on the table and money in the pockets of residents through sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
The successful completion of the project reflects the county government’s unwavering commitment to empowering communities, transforming livelihoods, and building a prosperous future for all Machakos residents.
