Meru, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a strong warning to President William Ruto over alleged plans to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office. Speaking at a public event in Meru, Gachagua accused the president of systematically sidelining key leaders, including himself, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, and now, potentially, the head of the judiciary.
“Ruto is planning to kick out Chief Justice Martha Koome. I want to tell President William Ruto, you kicked Rigathi Gachagua out, kicked Mithika Linturi out, and now you are cooking Martha Koome’s goose. Ruto, if you kick Martha Koome out, do not come to Meru!” Gachagua declared.
Mounting Political Tensions
Gachagua’s remarks come amid rising tensions within Kenya’s political circles, with accusations that the government is attempting to manipulate institutions to serve its interests. He suggested that efforts to remove Koome were part of a broader strategy to control the judiciary ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We are witnessing a systematic elimination of independent voices in government. If the judiciary falls under political influence, Kenya’s democracy is in danger,” Gachagua warned.
His comments also highlight the growing political rift between him and President Ruto. Once close allies during the 2022 elections, the two have since had a falling-out, culminating in Gachagua’s removal from office.
Defending Chief Justice Koome
Gachagua urged Koome to stand firm against alleged intimidation, expressing confidence in her leadership of the judiciary. “Martha Koome has done a commendable job. She should not be intimidated into stepping down. Kenyans need a judiciary that is free and independent.”
His call to action resonated strongly in Meru, a region that has political ties to both Koome and Linturi. By warning Ruto against setting foot in Meru should he proceed with the alleged plan, Gachagua signaled potential unrest in the region.
Government’s Silence
The government has yet to officially respond to Gachagua’s claims. However, political analysts suggest that any move against the Chief Justice could trigger a constitutional crisis. If Koome is removed, questions will arise about the executive’s commitment to upholding judicial independence.
With Kenya’s political landscape growing increasingly volatile, all eyes are now on President Ruto’s next move. Will he address Gachagua’s claims, or will tensions continue to escalate?
