Governor Malombe Champions Agriculture as Pillar of Kitui’s Economic Transformation

Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming Kitui County through agricultural development, positioning the sector as the bedrock of economic prosperity and food security.

Delivering a compelling address during the County Assembly session, Dr. Malombe echoed the enduring words of English writer Samuel Johnson: “Agriculture not only gives riches to a nation, but the only riches she can call her own.” He emphasized that agriculture is more than a livelihood  it is a catalyst for feeding the population, generating employment, and stimulating economic growth.

“In Kitui, agriculture remains the primary economic activity, employing over 66% of the county’s workforce and contributing to nearly 87% of rural household incomes,” the Governor noted, citing data from the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security report.

With a clear understanding of agriculture’s role in sustainable development, Governor Malombe revealed that his government has prioritized food and nutrition security as a strategic pathway to building a healthy and productive population.

At the core of this strategy is the expansion and strengthening of agricultural extension and advisory services, aimed at increasing production, boosting profitability, and equipping farmers with modern, climate-smart farming techniques.

“Governments cannot farm on behalf of individuals. Our role is to empower and support farmer whether individually, in cooperatives, or in agribusinesses with knowledge and skills,” Dr. Malombe stated.

These extension services, he explained, include farm visits, both residential and non-residential trainings, on-farm demonstrations, field days, and farmer field schools conducted by trained agricultural officers across the county.

As a result of these intensified efforts, an impressive 527,208 farmers have been trained in modern crop and livestock production methods an achievement Governor Malombe lauded as a major step toward food sufficiency and economic empowerment in Kitui.

The Governor reiterated that continued investment in agricultural education and innovation will ensure long-term resilience in the face of climate change, while also unlocking Kitui’s full agricultural potential.

“Our goal is a food-secure Kitui where agriculture becomes not just a means of survival, but a source of pride, prosperity, and sustainable livelihoods,” he concluded.
