Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. earned high praise from the Senate Standing Committee on Education on Thursday after presenting significant achievements in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and vocational training in the county.
Appearing before the committee at Parliament Buildings, Governor Mutula outlined the transformative progress Makueni has made in its education sector. He reported that the county has constructed 354 fully equipped ECDE centres, collectively serving more than 43,000 learners. Each centre includes two classrooms, an administration office, a storage room, ablution facilities, and two 10,000-litre water tanks—marking a substantial step toward improving access and quality in early learning.
Beyond infrastructure, Governor Mutula highlighted the human resource investment made by the county. A total of 957 ECDE teachers have been employed on permanent and pensionable terms, a move that was applauded by committee members for enhancing job security and strengthening education delivery.
In the area of technical training, the Governor reported that 61 Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) are operational across the county, enrolling nearly 4,000 trainees. These institutions are equipping young people with practical skills, giving them a competitive edge in today’s job market.
The committee, chaired by Senator Betty Montet, commended the county’s initiatives. Laikipia Senator John Kinyua praised the partnerships that have facilitated the success of these programs, while Vice Chairperson Prof. Margaret Kamar lauded the county’s dedication to youth empowerment through skills development. Senator Daniel Maanzo was also in attendance.
Governor Mutula was accompanied by CECMs Elizabeth Muli (Education), Damaris Kavoi (Finance), Nicholas Nzioka (Devolution), and Chief Officer Irene Makau. He called on the Senate to ensure timely and sufficient funding for counties to sustain and expand these educational advancements.
“Education is the backbone of transformation in our county,” Mutula emphasized, urging stronger support from the national government to guarantee that no learner is left behind.
