Makueni County’s growing reputation as a sports powerhouse received a major boost after Mutula Kilonzo Jr officially received trophies won by county teams at the 11th edition of the Kenya Youth Inter County Sports Association (KYISA) Games held in Laikipia County.
Welcoming the victorious teams, Governor Mutula placed strong emphasis on the county’s deliberate investment in structured sports development, noting that Makueni’s success is the result of sustained efforts to build talent from the grassroots level. He highlighted initiatives such as the Ligi Mashinani and the MKJ Supa Cup as key pillars in identifying and nurturing young athletes across the county.
Makueni delivered an outstanding performance at the national competition, clinching top honors in men’s football, men’s basketball (5×5), women’s basketball (5×5), and women’s basketball (3×3). The achievement underscores the effectiveness of the county’s integrated approach to sports management and youth engagement.
Governor Mutula reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with stakeholders in the sports sector to further expand opportunities for young talent. He noted that continued investment in training, infrastructure, and mentorship will be central to sustaining Makueni’s competitive edge on the national stage.
