Residents of Mumbuni North Ward are set to benefit from improved access to water and enhanced agricultural productivity following the commissioning of the Kyondu Weir by Machakos Governor H.E. Wavinya Ndeti.
The transformative project marks a significant milestone in the county government’s efforts to address persistent water shortages while strengthening food security and sustainable livelihoods across the region. For years, residents have faced challenges accessing reliable water for domestic use, livestock, and farming activities, often travelling long distances in search of the precious resource.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Wavinya Ndeti reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to delivering practical and sustainable solutions that directly improve the lives of Machakos residents.
The Kyondu Weir is expected to provide a dependable source of water for households, livestock, and irrigation, opening up new opportunities for year round farming. With reliable water now within reach, farmers will be able to increase agricultural production, diversify crops, and improve household incomes, contributing to greater food security and economic resilience within the community.
The project is a strategic investment by the County Government of Machakos aimed at enhancing water security while supporting long-term socio economic development. Beyond meeting immediate water needs, the weir is expected to spur local economic growth by enabling continuous agricultural activities and creating opportunities for increased productivity.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti also announced plans for Phase II of the project, which will further expand the weir’s capacity to meet the growing needs of residents. The next phase will include solarization of the water system to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs, reticulation to households to improve accessibility, fencing of the facility for security, and expansion of the reservoir to increase water storage capacity.
The planned upgrades underscore the county government’s commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the project while maximizing its impact on the lives of residents.
The commissioning of the Kyondu Weir reflects Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s broader vision of investing in critical infrastructure that promotes water security, agricultural transformation, and inclusive development, ultimately improving the quality of life for communities across Machakos County.
