Governor Wavinya Ndeti Completes Landmark FMD Surveillance in All 40 Wards to Boost Farmers’ Incomes

The County Government of Machakos has successfully concluded a comprehensive pre-Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination sero-surveillance exercise across all the 40 wards, marking a significant step in protecting the county’s livestock sector.

The exercise, conducted through the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock and Co-operative, involved the collection of baseline serum samples to establish the prevalence and movement of Foot and Mouth Disease within the county. The data gathered will now guide the rollout of the E-Voucher FMD vaccination programme, ensuring that interventions are targeted, timely and effective.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti emphasized that the initiative underscores her administration’s commitment to science-driven solutions in agriculture. She noted that controlling livestock diseases is critical to boosting cattle productivity, enhancing food security and expanding market access for farmers.

The Governor reaffirmed that her “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni” agenda remains focused on strengthening household incomes by investing in sustainable and impactful agricultural programmes. By adopting a proactive surveillance approach, Machakos is not only preventing potential outbreaks but also securing the economic future of thousands of livestock farmers.
With the surveillance phase complete, the county is now well-positioned to implement an informed and effective vaccination programme, reinforcing Governor Ndeti’s vision of a healthier, more resilient and prosperous livestock sector.
