The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory and proposed several alternative routes to ease the anticipated congestion as thousands of fans travel to Naivasha for the WRC Safari Rally this weekend.
In a statement released on Wednesday, KeNHA said the directives will be in effect from March 12 to March 15, 2026, when the world-renowned motorsport event is expected to attract large crowds from across the country and abroad.
KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the authority had prepared alternative routes to help motorists avoid heavy traffic along major highways leading to Nakuru and the rally venue in Naivasha.
“KeNHA hereby issues a traffic advisory and alternative routes to ease anticipated traffic congestion caused by the public heading to the Safari Rally event from 12th to 15th March, 2026,” Kimeli stated.
Among the routes recommended for motorists heading toward Nakuru and surrounding areas is the scenic route through Nairobi – Rironi – Flyover (Magumu) – Njambini – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
Drivers can also take the adventure route passing through Nairobi – Rironi – Naivasha – Engineer – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
Another alternative is the Thika trail via Nairobi – Thika – Magumu – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet, while motorists travelling through southern Kenya can opt for the Suswa shortcut along Nairobi – Ngong – Suswa – Narok – Nakuru.
The authority further warned truck drivers against parking along highways at undesignated areas, cautioning that offenders will face immediate arrest.
The 2026 edition of the WRC Safari Rally will run from March 12 to March 15 in Naivasha and is expected to bring together elite local and international drivers, as well as thousands of motorsport enthusiasts.
Since its return to the global rally calendar, the event has continued to strengthen Kenya’s reputation as a premier destination for motorsport.
For the first time since the rally returned to the championship calendar, spectators will also have the opportunity to watch the shake-down session during the 2026 edition. Competitors will tackle 20 special stages covering approximately 350 competitive kilometres across some of the most iconic and demanding rally terrain in the world.
