Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki said on Tuesday evening that the government has received a fresh status update on the Talanta Sports City project and that the main stadium is on track to be completed by December this year. While work on the bowl continues, Kindiki said the next phase will prioritise enabler utilities and the physical linking of Talanta to the nearby Bomas International Convention Complex to ensure a seamless, world-class experience for non-resident fans who will use BICC amenities.
“The main stadium will be ready by December and thereafter focus will shift to enabler utilities and linking Talanta Sports to the Bomas International Convention Complex to provide a world class experience for the non-resident sport fans,” Prof. Kindiki said, adding: “Step by step, Kenya’s transformation is on course.”
The government has repeatedly set the December timeline for Talanta’s completion as contractors accelerate works on the venue that will serve major national events and international fixtures.
Talanta Sports City planned as a 60,000-seat multipurpose stadium and anchor for a wider sports precinct forms a core part of Kenya’s infrastructure build-out ahead of continental competitions and major events. The facility is being developed under a large financing package that the government says will fast-track construction and deliver a world-class arena for football, rugby and large concerts.
Officials say the immediate priority, once the bowl is completed, will be to roll out utilities and access infrastructure roads, parking and guest services that will connect Talanta to the Bomas complex. The Bomas International Convention Complex is itself undergoing a major upgrade to include conference facilities, hotels and retail components intended to boost MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) capacity in Nairobi, and linking the two sites is aimed at giving out-of-town visitors convenient access to both sporting and hospitality amenities.
Government sources and contractors involved in the project say funding mobilised through capital markets and state financing instruments has helped sustain momentum on site, while periodic inspections by senior officials have sought to keep the delivery timetable on track. If the December target holds, Talanta will become a key national venue in time for upcoming high-profile events and to support Kenya’s drive to host and stage more international competitions.
