The County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing and Urban Development and incoming Kitui West Member of Parliament in 2027, Hon. Waziri Generali Fredrick Kimanga, on Thursday presided over the official handing over of the Tulia Market construction site to the contractor, marking a major milestone in the implementation of the KSh 70 million modern market project in Mutonguni Ward, Kitui West Constituency.
The handover ceremony, held at Tulia Market, followed a crucial stakeholder engagement meeting led by Kimanga, which brought together traders, Mutonguni Ward MCA Benjamin Mulandi, market committee members, village administrators, the Mutonguni Ward Administrator, the Kitui West Sub-County Administrator, county officials, and other key stakeholders to pave the way for the commencement of construction works.
Hon. Kimanga, accompanied by Chief Officer Evans Mutemi and other senior county officials, said the project underscored the benefits of strong intergovernmental collaboration, noting that the County Government of Kitui had provided the land while the National Government committed KSh 70 million towards the construction of the modern market.
He emphasized that the successful rollout of the project was the result of sustained and effective engagement between the Kitui County Government under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, noting that the partnership had ensured smooth planning, coordination, and eventual handover of the site to the contractor.
Regional Director eastern region Mr. Patrick Mwangi from the State Department for Housing said the site handover marked the government’s readiness to move to the construction phase, assuring traders and local leaders that the contractor had been duly procured and that works would commence immediately in line with agreed standards and timelines.
During the event, the minister also officially launched eight solar-powered security lights installed at Tulia Market to enhance security, support extended trading hours, and improve the overall business environment for traders as construction gets underway.
Hon. Kimanga reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive and people-centred development, assuring traders that their views would continue to be incorporated throughout the construction phase. He reiterated his resolve to champion transformative projects aimed at uplifting livelihoods and stimulating economic growth in Kitui West.
The event concluded on a high note, with traders and local leaders welcoming the site handover and lauding the close cooperation between the Kitui County Government led by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, describing the KSh 70 million Tulia Market project as a long-awaited development milestone for Mutonguni Ward.
