The Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation has dismissed misleading media reports following the Senate Health Committee’s oversight visit to Kitui County Referral Hospital, terming them inaccurate and premature.
The ministry clarified that the county’s health sector remains strong, noting that Kitui is the sixth largest county in Kenya with 326 health facilities the highest number in the country and 2,470 community health promoters.
Key achievements include operationalization of 16 new dispensaries, establishment of a Cancer Centre, ICU and HDU units, Haemophilia Clinic, and the construction of the South Eastern Kenya Renal Centre. The county also installed an 8,000-litre oxygen tank at KCRH, built modern drug stores, operationalized amenity and maternity units, and increased ambulances from 17 to 28 since 2022.
Over 1,096 healthcare workers have been promoted and recruitment of 200 more is underway. Kitui Referral and Mwingi hospitals are partially automated, with full automation of all 326 facilities targeted by June 2026.
The ministry urged the public to disregard misinformation, emphasizing that Kitui continues to make great strides in delivering quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare to its residents.
