The County Government of Kitui has made a major stride in strengthening health infrastructure with the official handover of equipment for the newly built modern mortuary at the Kitui County Referral Hospital (KCRH) Funeral Home.
During the ceremony, the County Public Health Officer, Ms. Lynn Kitwan, officially handed over 24 body coolers worth Ksh 13 million, marking the first phase of equipping the facility, which has a total capacity of 64 bodies.
“This project had stalled for years, but the county prioritized its completion, and today we are beginning the equipping process in phases. The 24 coolers will significantly boost mortuary services at KCRH, and we are proud to hand them over for use,” Ms. Kitwan said.
The modern facility also includes a hydraulic lift, which will ease operations and ensure bodies are handled with dignity. Kitwan further explained that the upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to raise KCRH to a Level 5 Hospital.
She added that more improvements are in the pipeline. “We plan to put up a perimeter wall, a public toilet, and a waiting bay in the next financial year. The work is not yet complete there is still much to be done to make this facility fully modernized,” she noted.
KCRH Medical Superintendent, Dr. Mungai, praised the progress, observing that the transformation is long overdue. “Compared to the old mortuary, this is a very big improvement. It will serve the people of Kitui with dignity and efficiency,” he said.
The new mortuary is expected to reduce congestion, improve service delivery, and give families a dignified environment as they bid farewell to their loved ones.
