Thousands of mourners on Monday, February 2, 2026 attended the burial of Deacon Dennis Bernard Maithya.
He was laid to rest at the Kitui Catholic Diocese’s Clergy Cemetery located at the diocese’s Saint Patrick’s Mutuni Parish.
The requiem mass was presided over by the Kitui Catholic Diocesan Bishop, the Right Reverend Joseph Mutisya Mwongela. The retired Machakos Catholic Diocesan Bishop, the Right Reverend Norman King’oo Wambua was among the mourners.
Dennis Bernard Maithya was born on April 1, 1995 in Kauma Village, Kauma Location, Kitui District.
He began his primary school education at the Kyeni Primary School in Kitui District where he studied from 2001 to 2010. He later joined the Weaver Bird High School in Kitale District, Trans Nzoia County in 2011 and successfully completed his secondary school education in 2014.
He began his priestly formation at the Saint Mary’s Major Seminary in Molo District, Nakuru County where he undertook his spiritual year from 2016 to 2017. He then proceeded to the Saint Augustine’s Senior Seminary in Mabanga, Bungoma Central District in the Bungoma County for philosophical studies from 2017 to 2020.
He joined the Saint Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Nairobi in 2021 where he pursued theological studies and completed in 2025. He graduated from the Catholic University of East Africa on October 24, 2025. He was ordained as a deacon on Monday, December 8, 2025 by Bishop Joseph Mutisya Mwongela.
He died in a road accident at the Kyanundu area within the Mwingi Central District, Kitui County on Friday, January 23, 2026, aged 30.
