Kitui County came alive with excitement as the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) officially launched its National Games at Kitui Teachers Training College, bringing together students, staff and officials from KMTC campuses across the country for a celebration of sports, talent and unity.
Speaking during the official launch, KMTC Chief Executive Officer and Head of Administration, Dr. Kelly Oluoch, underscored the importance of co-curricular activities in shaping well-rounded healthcare professionals. He said sports and other talent-based activities are an integral part of student development and should complement academic excellence.
Dr. Oluoch noted that learning should not be confined to the classroom, emphasizing that many students possess unique talents that deserve to be nurtured through sporting competitions and other co-curricular engagements.
“Education is not only about books and examinations. Our students have diverse talents, and these games provide them with an opportunity to showcase their abilities, build teamwork, strengthen friendships and promote physical and mental well-being,” he said.
He added that the national games reflect KMTC’s commitment to holistic education by producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also physically fit, disciplined and socially responsible.
Kitui County Executive Committee Member for Health, Ruth Koki, welcomed the participants and expressed the county government’s pride in hosting the prestigious national event. She described the selection of Kitui as a great honour and a demonstration of confidence in the county’s capacity to organize major national events.
Koki said the games provide an opportunity for participants to interact, exchange ideas and foster national cohesion while showcasing their sporting talents.
She assured the visiting teams of the county government’s full support throughout the competition and wished all participants success as they compete in the spirit of friendship, fairness and sportsmanship.
The KMTC National Games are expected to feature a wide range of sporting disciplines, offering students a platform to compete, discover new talents and strengthen relationships beyond the classroom while promoting the values of teamwork, discipline and excellence.
