MP Nimrod Mbai: Coal in Mutitu Will Not Be Mined Due to High cost.

Kitui East Member of Parliament, Hon. Nimrod Mbai, has ruled out the possibility of coal mining in the Mutitu region, citing the significant depth of the coal deposits and the high cost of extraction and relocation of residents.

Speaking during the unveiling of a new National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NGCDF) project, which includes the establishment of a Huduma Centre in Mutitu, Hon. Mbai stated that reports of coal mining in the area are unfounded.

“The coal seams lie too deep beneath the ground, and the cost of accessing them combined with the expense of resettling communities living above makes mining economically unviable,” he said.

Mbai assured residents that there are no ongoing plans to exploit the coal deposits and urged the public to dismiss any fears of forced displacement or illegal mining activities.

He emphasized that the government’s focus will remain on enhancing infrastructure and delivering essential services. “Our priority is development that benefits the people directly, such as the new Huduma Centre,” he added.

The Huduma Centre is expected to improve access to government services for residents in the remote area.
