Murkomen Defends Police Amid Legal Threats Over Gen Z Protest Killings

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has affirmed his support for the police and top security officials, defending their actions during recent Gen Z-led protests that turned deadly.

Speaking in Kajiado County during a security tour under the Jukwaa la Usalama initiative, Murkomen maintained that the police acted lawfully in quelling anti-government demonstrations, and insisted he would not be intimidated by threats of prosecution.

This comes a day after activist and former presidential candidate Dr. Reuben Kigame filed a High Court petition seeking to privately prosecute Murkomen, Inspector General Douglas Kanja, and DCI boss Mohamed Amin over alleged crimes against humanity. Kigame accuses them of orchestrating or enabling a violent crackdown on peaceful youth-led protests against high taxes and economic hardship.

“We acted within the law. I am not afraid of legal action. I will always stand with the Inspector General and the officers who upheld order. If given another chance, we shall act the same way to preserve peace,” Murkomen said, challenging critics to also speak about lives lost in the chaos caused by what he termed as “anarchy.”

The CS warned that the government would not tolerate destruction of public institutions during protests and stressed the need for maintaining law and order.

Murkomen also revealed plans to modernize police infrastructure, noting that 60% of stations are still housed in colonial-era buildings. He said the stalled police housing project would now be prioritized to improve the welfare of officers.

On broader security concerns, Murkomen highlighted insecurity in Kitengela, Ngong, and Kiserian, and pledged to address porous borders and human-wildlife conflicts in the region.

Touching on regional matters, he assured that the East African Community remains strong, with free movement across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania supporting cross-border cooperation and trade.

He also outlined preparations for upcoming international football events, including CHAN and AFCON qualifiers, saying enhanced security including CCTV surveillance and police presence has been put in place at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums. Ticketing will be strictly online to control crowds and ensure safety.

“We are ready. Fan safety comes first. Harambee Stars deserve a secure and encouraging atmosphere,” Murkomen concluded.
