Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Hon. Mwengi Mutuse, popularly known as “Round Mbili” and “The Man of Two Terms,” has launched a fierce attack on Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga over the continued invasion of elephants in Kikumbulyu and Lower Makindu, accusing the wildlife agency of failing to protect residents from destruction caused by the animals.
Speaking during a massive public gathering at Kathyaka Market, Hon. Mutuse said the suffering of residents had reached intolerable levels, with elephants repeatedly invading farms, destroying crops, and leaving families counting huge losses despite numerous appeals for intervention.
The outspoken legislator claimed that some individuals were attempting to use the elephant crisis as a political weapon against him by spreading claims that he had failed to serve the people. However, Mutuse dismissed such assertions and instead placed the blame squarely on the KWS leadership.
“The people of Kikumbulyu and Lower Makindu have suffered for far too long. For the last three years, I have engaged the KWS Director General on this issue countless times, but the invasions continue. This is no longer a simple wildlife conflict; it is a failure of leadership and responsibility,” said Mutuse.
The MP accused Prof. Kanga of ignoring the cries of affected communities and failing to respond adequately despite the devastating impact on farmers whose livelihoods depend on agriculture.
Mutuse warned that if immediate measures are not taken to remove the elephants from the affected areas and protect residents, he would mobilize leaders and stakeholders to push for accountability at the highest levels of the wildlife agency.
“If Prof. Kanga cannot perform his duties and protect Kenyans from this endless suffering, then he has no business remaining in office. Public servants are employed to serve the people, not to watch silently as communities suffer losses year after year,” he declared.
The MP emphasized that President William Ruto’s administration is founded on service delivery and responsiveness to citizens’ needs, adding that government officials who fail to act on pressing public concerns risk undermining the government’s development agenda.
Mutuse further thanked the residents of Kathyaka for turning out in large numbers during the empowerment programme organized by area MCA Hon. Jackson Mbalu. He also expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his personal contribution towards supporting local development initiatives.
The event was attended by Aviation Principal Secretary Hon. Terry Mbaika, Hon. Fred Muteti, Hon. Kisoi Munyao, Hon. George Mwangangi, Hon. Regina Ndambuki, Dr. Andrew Mulwa, Dr. Stephen Ndolo, MCA Cosmas Mutunga, nominated MCA Josephine Ndambuki, and several other leaders.
As chants of “UDA” and “Two Terms” filled the air, Mutuse assured residents that he would continue fighting for their interests and would not relent until a lasting solution is found to the persistent elephant menace affecting Kibwezi West.
