The incoming Mwingi West Member of Parliament, Jonathan Ngenga, has declared an all-out war against illegal sand harvesting cartels operating across the Mwingi region, saying he only needs one week to completely dismantle the networks that have allegedly destroyed rivers and degraded the environment.
Speaking during a morning breakfast radio show at Kwitu FM, Ngenga accused powerful cartels of exploiting natural resources for selfish gain while leaving local communities to suffer the consequences of environmental destruction.
The outspoken leader said rivers in several parts of Mwingi have been severely damaged due to uncontrolled and illegal sand harvesting activities, warning that if urgent action is not taken, future generations could face a serious water crisis.
Ngenga noted that the destruction of riverbeds has negatively affected farming activities, water availability, and the general ecosystem in the region. He blamed weak enforcement and alleged collusion between some officials and cartels for the continued exploitation of the rivers.
The incoming MP maintained that leadership requires courage and commitment, adding that he is ready to confront individuals involved in the illegal business regardless of their influence or status.
“I only need one week to deal with the sand cartels that have destroyed our rivers in Mwingi. Our environment must be protected, and the resources of our people cannot continue being misused by a few selfish individuals,” Ngenga said during the live radio interview.
He further promised to champion sustainable environmental conservation measures and ensure local communities benefit legally and responsibly from natural resources.
Ngenga’s remarks are expected to ignite debate across Kitui County, where illegal sand harvesting has remained a major concern for residents, environmentalists, and leaders over the years. His strong stand against the cartels has already attracted praise from sections of residents who believe firm action is long overdue.
