Kitui, Kenya – Thousands of residents in Kitui County can now access essential medicines after the county received a KES 56 million consignment of medical supplies. The much-needed shipment, sourced from the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS), is expected to alleviate chronic shortages in public hospitals and dispensaries, improving healthcare services across the region.
The delivery was received by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, marking another significant step in the county government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the healthcare system. Chief Officer for Drugs and Medical Supplies, Aggrey Kamba, assured residents that the administration is committed to maintaining a consistent supply of medicines to ensure no patient is turned away due to stockouts.
“This consignment will go a long way in addressing the shortages that have affected our healthcare facilities. The county government is actively working to ensure that all hospitals, health centers, and dispensaries are well-stocked at all times,” Kamba stated during the reception.
The latest consignment follows a recent delivery from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), reflecting the county’s proactive approach to preventing medical stockouts. By sourcing supplies from multiple partners, including MEDS and KEMSA, the county government aims to mitigate disruptions that have previously strained healthcare delivery.
For years, many residents—especially those in remote areas—have struggled to access life-saving medicines, often forced to travel long distances to private pharmacies or neighboring counties. The arrival of these supplies is expected to ease this burden, ensuring that public health facilities can cater to the medical needs of patients within Kitui.
Under the leadership of Governor Julius Malombe, the county has prioritized investment in the health sector, working closely with key partners to guarantee a steady supply of essential drugs and non-pharmaceutical items. The move has been welcomed by health workers and residents alike, who have long called for improved service delivery.
However, while the latest delivery brings immediate relief, concerns remain about the long-term sustainability of the county’s procurement strategy. As Kitui’s population grows, so does the demand for healthcare services, placing pressure on the administration to maintain uninterrupted supplies.
For now, the focus shifts to the efficient distribution and management of the medical supplies to ensure they reach the intended facilities without delays. With renewed hope among residents, the county government faces the challenge of turning this relief into a lasting solution for Kitui’s healthcare sector.
