Makueni County Ranked Second Most Transparent in Kenya

Makueni County has once again put Lower Eastern on the map after being ranked the second most transparent county in Kenya, according to the 2024 County Budget Transparency Survey. The county scored 83 points, coming just behind West Pokot.

The survey, conducted annually by Bajeti Hub (formerly International Budget Partnership Kenya), reviews how openly counties share key budget documents with the public. These include the Program-Based Budget, Citizen Budget, County Fiscal Strategy Paper, Annual Development Plan, Finance Act, and implementation reports, among others.

Speaking during the awards ceremony at Nairobi’s Serena Hotel, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. called on the national government to prioritize timely funding for counties, saying, “Devolution is the future of Kenya.” His remarks were supported by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, who also urged stronger support for county governments.

Governor Mutula praised Bajeti Hub for advancing openness in governance and reaffirmed Makueni’s commitment to inclusive leadership. “We will continue to involve all residents including vulnerable groups in transparent and participatory development,” he said.

Makueni’s Executive Committee Member for Finance, Damaris Kavoi, joined other senior officials at the event, representing the county’s dedication to financial transparency and accountability.
