Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has earned national recognition for spearheading remarkable reforms in the county’s education sector, with the Senate Education Committee praising his administration’s strategic investment in Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs).
Led by Committee Chair Senator Betty Montet, the delegation toured the county on Friday to evaluate progress in education infrastructure and service delivery. During a courtesy call to the Governor, the committee commended Makueni’s bold milestones operationalizing 61 fully functional VTCs and constructing 384 modern, well-equipped ECD classrooms since 2014. These developments have transformed the learning experience for more than 39,000 children, replacing dilapidated facilities with conducive, learner-friendly environments.
Senator Daniel Maanzo noted that the achievements are a direct result of visionary leadership and consistent prioritization of education under Governor Mutula’s watch.
Governor Mutula reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to expanding access to quality education, emphasizing that the success of these programs underscores the potential of devolved governance when coupled with prudent resource management. He urged the national government to extend conditional grants to counties to sustain and scale such gains, citing the growing demand for education services amidst limited funding.
“Our children deserve the best start in life, and our youth need skills to compete in today’s economy. Education is not just a priority — it is the foundation of Makueni’s future,” Governor Mutula said.
Present at the meeting were Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, Senate Committee Vice Chair Prof. Margaret Kamar, Senators Nderitu Kinyua (Laikipia), James Murango (Kirinyaga), Johnes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta), along with CECM for Education Japheth Mang’oka and CECM for Finance Damaris Kavoi.
