Senator Agnes Kavindu Muthama is facing mounting criticism from Machakos residents and political observers, who accuse her of abandoning her constitutional duties in the Senate while repeatedly attacking the county governor over issues that fall squarely within her own mandate.
Under the Constitution of Kenya 2010, a senator is tasked with representing their county in the Senate, safeguarding devolution, lobbying for resources, and providing oversight on how county funds are used. However, critics say Senator Kavindu has been missing in action where it matters most on the Senate floor where decisions on funding, oversight, and county laws are made.
Instead, she has allegedly resorted to public grandstanding and political mudslinging against the governor, blaming the county executive for problems she has the legislative power to address.
“She is sleeping in the Senate and waking up only to throw accusations at the governor,” said a Machakos resident in a recent public forum. “We elected her to be our voice in Nairobi, not a commentator in local politics.”
Observers argue that stalled projects, budget constraints, and gaps in service delivery are exactly the kind of issues a senator should be addressing through Senate committees, budget debates, and legislative initiatives not through roadside declarations and blame games.
By failing to vigorously lobby for better funding formulas, demand transparency in budget allocations, or table motions that protect Machakos’ share of resources, Senator Kavindu is being accused of betraying the trust of voters who expected her to fight for the county’s fair share of the national cake.
“This is dereliction of duty, pure and simple,” said a political analyst in machakos. “When a senator fails to speak up for their county in the Senate, the whole county suffers. The governor’s role is to implement hers is to fight for resources and oversight. If she’s not doing that, she’s part of the problem, not the solution.”
With growing frustration on the ground, calls are intensifying for Senator Kavindu to either wake up to her Senate responsibilities or step aside for someone willing to defend Machakos in the national arena.
