President William Ruto on Thursday led a high-profile government delegation to Mwingi North, Kitui County, where he officially handed over the newly constructed Kamuwongo Fresh Produce Market to the County Government of Kitui and presided over the issuance of 15,000 title deeds to area residents.
The modern market, which will host more than 200 traders, is expected to transform Kamuwongo into a vibrant commercial hub, unlocking local business potential and creating employment opportunities, particularly for the youth. The facility marks a major step in the national government’s agenda to enhance rural markets and empower small-scale traders across the country.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure, ensuring land security, and promoting economic growth in the Lower Eastern region.
“We are determined to empower every corner of our country through tangible projects that directly touch the lives of our people. The Kamuwongo Market will give our traders a safe and modern space to do business, while the title deeds will guarantee residents ownership and peace of mind over their land,” said the President.
The event was attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, ministers from the national government, mps among other leaders
Dr. Malombe welcomed the national government’s development initiatives, noting that the projects would spur economic growth and open up Kamuwongo and surrounding areas for investment.
“This market and the new road infrastructure are milestones in transforming Kitui’s rural economy. We appreciate the national government’s partnership in supporting our county’s development agenda,” Governor Malombe said.
In the same visit, President Ruto launched the tarmacking of the 13-kilometre Kamuwongo–Kandwia Road, which forms part of the Mwingi–Kamuwongo–Ciangera road network. Once complete, the road will link the Thika–Garissa Road at Mwingi Town with the Ena–Chiakariga Road, easing transport and improving access to markets for agricultural produce from the region.
Additionally, the Head of State inspected the Tulia–Mbondoni Road and flagged off the Kitui Last Mile Electrification Project at Migwani. The electrification initiative aims to connect more households, schools, and trading centres to the national power grid, further promoting socio-economic growth in Kitui County.
President Ruto reaffirmed that the government remains focused on implementing projects that directly uplift communities in the Lower Eastern region, particularly in agriculture, infrastructure, and energy access.
