President William Ruto, accompanied by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, on Thursday unveiled a major development boost for Kitui County through the rollout of expanded electricity connections and key infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the region’s economy.
During the visit to Mwingi West Constituency, President Ruto announced that 20,000 additional households in Kitui County will soon be connected to the national power grid under the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, at a cost of KSh 2.3 billion.
The President noted that the electrification drive will benefit residents across all eight constituencies in Kitui, spurring small-scale enterprises, improving access to education and healthcare facilities, and enhancing the overall quality of life.
“Electricity is the lifeline of modern development. Through this programme, we are empowering our people to create jobs, grow their businesses, and live better lives,” said President Ruto.
Deputy President Prof. Kindiki lauded the initiative, describing it as a cornerstone of the Kenya Kwanza government’s commitment to inclusive development. He emphasized that the government remains steadfast in ensuring that rural communities benefit equally from national progress.
“We are bridging the gap between urban and rural Kenya. Every village in Kitui must feel the impact of development — in power, water, roads, and opportunities,” said Prof. Kindiki.
While in the region, President Ruto and the Deputy President inspected the ongoing construction of the 33-kilometre Tulia–Migwani–Mbondoni Road, a project expected to revolutionize transport and trade within Kitui and neighbouring counties.
The modern road network will ease the movement of goods and people, reduce transport costs, and open up remote areas for investment and agricultural trade. Local residents have already expressed optimism that the road and power projects will inject new life into the county’s economy.
“For years, our businesses have struggled due to poor roads and lack of electricity. With these developments, things will finally change,” said a Migwani trader.
President Ruto reiterated his administration’s focus on delivering practical, people-centred projects that uplift ordinary Kenyans. He assured Kitui residents that his government would continue investing in infrastructure, agriculture, and education to secure long-term growth in the Lower Eastern region.
