A burial ceremony in Kalawa, Mbooni Constituency, Makueni County, turned dramatic today after Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua was loudly heckled by angry mourners as he attempted to read President William Ruto’s condolence message.
CS Mutua, who had risen to convey the President’s message during the burial of the late Konzollo Munyao former mp and minister, was met with a defiant crowd that broke into chants of “One term! One term!”, forcing him to pause his speech several times. The clearly agitated mourners accused the government of neglecting the region and expressed open displeasure at its leadership.
The chaotic scene unfolded in full view of a strong delegation of opposition leaders led by former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, and several other Azimio–aligned politicians who had attended the ceremony to console the bereaved family.
The opposition leaders watched as the crowd relentlessly disrupted CS Mutua’s attempts to address them, with the chants growing louder the more he tried to proceed with the President’s message. Security officers and local organizers were forced to intervene to restore calm, though the audience remained visibly agitated.
The late Konzollo Munyao, a respected figure in the community, was laid to rest amid calls for unity, better governance, and dignity during national events calls that echoed across speeches delivered after the disruption.
Political observers say the heckling reflects the growing frustration in the region over unfulfilled government promises and shifting political loyalties ahead of future elections.
Despite the tension, the ceremony concluded peacefully, with leaders urging residents to honour the memory of the late Munyao by fostering peace and togetherness.
