Livestock Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke on Friday led a major humanitarian and empowerment initiative at Nuu Market in Mwingi Central Constituency, delivering 100 beehives to women groups and distributing 1,200 bags of relief food to vulnerable households in Nuu Ward.
Speaking during the exercise, the PS said the intervention was part of the national government’s broader push to strengthen household incomes while cushioning communities against food insecurity. He noted that apiculture presents a sustainable economic opportunity, particularly for women, as it requires minimal land and offers quick returns through honey production and related value chains.
Mr. Mueke underscored that empowering women economically was key to building resilient families and stable communities, adding that development-oriented programs must reach the grassroots to have meaningful impact. He said the relief food distribution was intended to support families facing hardship as longer-term livelihood solutions take root.
Turning to the region’s political history, the Livestock PS cautioned against a return to politically instigated tensions that had in the past disrupted peace and slowed development in parts of Mwingi Central. He stressed that leaders bear a responsibility to unite communities and focus on service delivery rather than divisive rhetoric.
He urged residents and political actors alike to prioritize peace, dialogue and development, noting that stability was essential for attracting investment and ensuring government programs succeed. According to the PS, politics should be used as a tool to improve lives, not to fracture communities.
The event brought together key local and national stakeholders, including former Mwingi Central Member of Parliament Hon. Joe Mutambu, representatives from Paza Sauti Foundation, and officials from Konza Technopolis. The leaders present echoed the call for collaboration, peace and people-centered development.Residents welcomed the support, terming it timely and impactful, particularly for women groups set to benefit from the beekeeping project. The initiative was lauded as a practical blend of relief and empowerment, aimed at fostering self-reliance while addressing immediate needs.
