The County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing and Urban Development and incoming Kitui West Member of Parliament in 2027, Hon. Waziri Generali Fredrick Kimanga, on Friday led a key stakeholder engagement meeting at Tulia Market in Mutonguni Ward, Kitui West Constituency, paving the way for the construction of a KSh 70 million modern market through a strategic partnership between the Kitui County Government and the National Government.
Hon. Kimanga, accompanied by Chief Officer Evans Mutemi and other senior county officials, met traders, market committee members, and local stakeholders to discuss the implementation of the project, which is expected to significantly boost trade and local economic growth.
It emerged during the meeting that the project was secured through the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, under whose administration the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development formally requested the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Housing and Urban Development to support the construction of Tulia Market. The request was made under the Affordable Housing Programme, a national government scheme aimed at improving market infrastructure and livelihoods.
Under the collaboration framework, the Kitui County Government provided the land for the project, while the National Government committed KSh 70 million to fund the construction. Kimanga emphasized that the arrangement demonstrated effective intergovernmental cooperation, with the county acting as the custodian of public land and the national government mobilising resources for development.
The minister further revealed that Tulia Market was among several markets earmarked for construction across Kitui County under the same programme, following Governor Malombe’s engagement with the State Department of Housing. He noted that the initiative would modernise trading spaces countywide and strengthen grassroots economies.
During the visit, eight solar-powered security lights were officially launched at Tulia Market, a move aimed at enhancing security, improving safety, and enabling traders to operate for longer hours.

Hon. Kimanga assured stakeholders that their views would be incorporated as the project moved into the construction phase, reaffirming his commitment to delivering transformative development both as a cabinet member and the incoming Kitui West MP in 2027.
The meeting concluded with optimism among traders and local leaders, who welcomed the investment and lauded Governor Malombe’s leadership alongside the collaboration between the Kitui County Government and the National Government in delivering critical market infrastructure.
