Makueni Strengthens Renewable Energy Push as Governor Mutula Champions Innovative Power Solutions

Makueni County has intensified its push for sustainable and cost-effective service delivery following the rollout of a pilot project aimed at powering health and water facilities using compound semiconductor–enabled renewable energy technology.

The initiative, championed by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., is expected to reduce electricity costs in key public facilities by up to 30 percent while enhancing reliability of power supply in institutions that operate round the clock.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with officials from the University of Nairobi held in Wote on February 4, 2026, Governor Mutula said the county government remains committed to adopting innovative energy solutions that strengthen essential services and lower operational expenses. He noted that stable and affordable power supply is critical in improving efficiency in hospitals and water infrastructure across the county.
The project will be implemented in partnership with the University of Nairobi under the Compound Semiconductor–Enabled Renewable Energy Systems for Powering Critical Buildings in Africa programme, spearheaded by the institution’s Department of Physics.

During the engagement, a delegation from the University of Nairobi led by Prof. Julius Mwabora briefed the Governor on the technology, noting that the system offers higher efficiency and lower operational costs compared to conventional energy solutions.

Governor Mutula welcomed the collaboration, stating that apart from reducing electricity expenses, the project will help build technical capacity among county staff, enabling them to manage and sustain renewable energy systems effectively.

He further highlighted that Makueni County is well-positioned to benefit from the project due to its strong solar energy potential, adding that the county has already developed policies and energy plans that support the expansion of renewable energy initiatives aimed at improving service delivery to residents.

The pilot project is expected to strengthen Makueni’s position as a leader in embracing sustainable and innovative solutions that enhance efficiency in public service sectors, particularly health and water provision.
