The Machakos County Government, under the leadership of Governor Wavinya Ndeti, continued to strengthen livestock farming through a comprehensive monitoring and support exercise for beneficiaries of the subsidized Artificial Insemination (AI) programme. The exercise, implemented through the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock and Co-operatives, was aimed at ensuring the long-term success, effectiveness and sustainability of the initiative while providing ongoing technical guidance to participating farmers.
The cattle upgrading breeding programme, which was launched by Governor Ndeti in December 2024, had been rolled out across all the 40 wards in Machakos County. The governor, as the Chief Executive Officer of the county government, championed the programme as a strategic intervention to improve local cattle breeds and significantly boost both milk and beef productivity.
During the monitoring exercise, farmers whose cows had already calved expressed appreciation to the county government for the timely intervention. Many reported visible improvements in the quality, health and overall performance of their livestock, noting increased milk yields and stronger calves as direct benefits of the programme. The positive feedback underscored the impact of Governor Ndeti’s deliberate investment in modern and affordable livestock breeding technologies.
The initiative was widely viewed as a transformative step in strengthening the livestock value chain across the county. By improving cattle breeds and productivity, the programme had contributed to increased household incomes, enhanced food security and improved livelihoods for farming communities.
The AI programme aligned closely with Governor Ndeti’s development blueprint, Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni, which emphasized food sufficiency, economic empowerment and sustainable growth. Through such farmer-centered interventions, the Machakos County Government, under her leadership, reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting rural economies and ensuring that agriculture remained a key driver of prosperity for the people of Machakos County.
