Kitui County Woman Representative Irene Kasalu has criticized the government’s plan to sell stakes in private entities, warning that the move could further destabilize the country’s economy if not carefully managed.
Speaking during a meeting with scholarship beneficiaries from Kitui County who have been supported through her education initiative, Kasalu faulted the administration of William Ruto over proposals to offload government interests in key companies, including Safaricom.
Kasalu argued that the government has publicly maintained that the sale of such entities would help reduce reliance on borrowing. However, she noted that provisions within the proposed bill still allow for additional borrowing, a contradiction she said could worsen Kenya’s already mounting public debt.
“The government claims that selling shares in these companies will help reduce borrowing, but when you carefully read the bill, there are clauses that still permit borrowing. This raises serious concerns about the country’s economic stability,” she said.
According to the legislator, increasing debt levels without clear safeguards risks placing a heavier financial burden on ordinary Kenyans and could undermine the country’s long-term economic growth.
Kasalu spoke while interacting with students from Kitui County who have benefited from her scholarship programme since secondary school and are now pursuing higher education in various universities across the country. She praised the students for their determination and academic achievements, noting that investing in education remains one of the most effective ways to empower communities.
The Woman Representative expressed pride in the progress made by the beneficiaries, saying many of them are already making significant strides in their respective fields of study.
She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting education initiatives in the county, emphasizing that empowering young people through education would help shape a brighter future for Kitui County and the country at large.
