India’s men’s cricket team will receive a massive $14 million reward after winning the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The team secured the title on Sunday with a dominant 96-run victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The win marks a historic achievement for India, as the team lifted the T20 World Cup trophy for a record third time. It also made India the first team to successfully defend the title and the first nation to win the tournament on home soil.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the BCCI praised the players, coaches, selectors, and support staff for their outstanding performance. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia described the victory as a moment that cements India’s place “among the most successful teams in the history of the format.”
The $14 million reward announced by the BCCI will be shared among the entire squad, including the coaching and support staff who contributed to the team’s success.
Apart from the board’s reward, India will also receive $2.34 million in prize money from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for winning the tournament. Runners-up New Zealand will take home $1.17 million.
Cricket remains the most followed sport in India, where players enjoy celebrity-like status. The national team’s victory sparked nationwide celebrations, with thousands of fans taking to the streets wearing blue Indian jerseys, beating drums, and dancing to Bollywood music late into the night.
The triumph not only strengthens India’s dominance in the shortest format of the game but also highlights the country’s deep passion for cricket, a sport that continues to unite millions across the diverse nation.
