The National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has pledged full support for sand harvesters in Kitui County, promising to defend their interests “up to the Senate of the Republic of Kenya.”
Ichung’wah made the strong remarks during a church fundraiser held at Kwa Mutonga in Kithumula Ward, Kitui West Constituency, where leaders and residents had gathered in support of church development projects.
The Majority Leader was accompanied by Oscar Sudi, the Member of Parliament for Kapsabet, Charles Nguna, the Member of Parliament for Mwingi West, alongside other political, religious, and community leaders.
Addressing the congregation and local residents, Ichung’wah emphasized the critical role played by sand harvesters in sustaining thousands of families across Kitui County and contributing to the country’s Affordable Housing Programme.
“We will protect Kitui sand harvesters up to the Senate of the Republic of Kenya; they play an important role in supporting livelihoods and Affordable Housing. Let Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua know that,” said Ichung’wah amid cheers from residents.
The remarks come at a time when the debate surrounding sand harvesting in Kitui County continues to attract political attention, with concerns over regulation, environmental conservation, and the welfare of local communities heavily depending on the sector for income.
Ichung’wah defended the economic importance of the sand harvesting business, noting that many youths and families in Kitui rely on the activity for their daily survival. He stated that the government recognizes the sector as a key economic driver that also supports national development projects, especially affordable housing initiatives being spearheaded by President William Ruto’s administration.
The Majority Leader further assured residents that leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration would continue engaging stakeholders to ensure local communities benefit from natural resources while protecting their economic interests.
His sentiments appeared to be a direct response to concerns and criticisms that have emerged from some leaders over the management and transportation of sand from Kitui County.
Residents who attended the fundraiser welcomed Ichung’wah’s sentiments, saying the sand harvesting sector has transformed the livelihoods of many households in the region through employment and business opportunities.
The church fundraiser also brought together several political, religious, and community leaders from Kitui West and neighboring areas, with leaders calling for unity, development, and continued support for community empowerment initiatives.
