A Promise Fulfilled: Governor Wavinya Ndeti Revives Yatta Canal, Restoring Hope to Farmers

The long-awaited revitalization of the Yatta Canal has finally become a reality, marking a historic milestone for the people of Machakos County and affirming Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s commitment to transformative and results-driven leadership.

When H.E. Wavinya Ndeti toured the expansive Yatta Plateau in 2022, she encountered distressed farmers and families whose livelihoods had been severely affected by years of neglect and heavy siltation that had rendered the canal nearly impassable. Listening attentively to their concerns, the Governor made a solemn pledge to restore the canal — a vital water artery that sustains agriculture and supports thousands of households.

The comprehensive desilting and restoration of the Yatta Canal stands as a testament to Governor Ndeti’s leadership philosophy, one anchored on action, delivery, and tangible impact. What was once a clogged and forgotten waterway has now been revived, allowing life-giving water to once again flow across farms and homesteads.

Beyond infrastructure, the project represents a bold stride toward food security, economic empowerment, and community resilience. It directly advances the Governor’s transformative development agenda, “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni,” which seeks to ensure food on the table and money in the pockets of Machakos residents.

With the canal restored, farmers in Yatta can now look forward to increased agricultural productivity, improved household incomes, and enhanced food supply across the county. Schools, small-scale traders, and agribusiness ventures that depend on reliable water access are also set to benefit significantly.

The flowing waters of the Yatta Canal now symbolize more than irrigation, they reflect renewed hope, strengthened livelihoods and a brighter, more secure future for the people of Yatta and the greater Machakos County.

Through decisive leadership and unwavering dedication, Governor Wavinya Ndeti has once again demonstrated that development promises made to the people are promises meant to be kept.
