Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has called on county governments to reassess and strengthen their health budgets to improve surgical services and overall healthcare delivery.
Speaking in Mombasa during the Annual Scientific Conference of the Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK), the Makueni Governor emphasized the urgent need for increased investment in critical areas such as surgical equipment, infrastructure, and workforce capacity. He noted that strategic health financing is essential for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The conference brought together more than 400 surgeons, development partners, and health stakeholders to discuss key priorities in strengthening surgical systems. Deliberations focused on financing, coordination, referral systems, and improving the quality of care across counties.
Governor Mutula highlighted Makueni County’s adoption of Proximie technology as a transformative step in enhancing surgical care. The platform enables real-time collaboration, remote mentorship, and continuous training for surgeons, contributing to improved patient outcomes.
He further urged healthcare professionals to actively participate in county planning and budgeting processes, stressing that their expertise is critical in shaping responsive and well-funded health systems.
SSK President Michael Mwachilo also called on practitioners to engage in policy discussions and leverage data to advocate for increased allocations to the health sector.
In recognition of his contribution to advancing surgical care, Governor Mutula was appointed an Honorary Ambassador of the Surgical Society of Kenya.
The conference underscored the importance of collaboration between government, healthcare professionals, and development partners in driving sustainable improvements in Kenya’s health sector.
