A Rongo court has directed the exhumation of the late GSU officer, Dan Ayoo Obura, who was buried in the compound of the controversial St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in Africa, Rongo Sub-County.
Delivering the ruling, Principal Magistrate Chrisphine Orwo ordered that the remains be reburied at Obura’s ancestral home in Kochieng Village, Nyando Sub-County, Kisumu County. The magistrate instructed the officer’s wife, Lilian Atieno, to guide public health officials to the burial site to ensure the process is carried out without disturbance. Security during the exercise will be provided by Kamagambo Police Station.
The court emphasized that customary law should guide the burial, dismissing the argument that Obura was interred at the church due to selling his only land as “illogical.” The ruling further mandated that his wife participate in the reburial rites.
Obura was buried at the church in March 2025, months after the government had shut down the institution and declared it a crime scene over multiple allegations. His widow has since expressed intentions to appeal the decision.
