Eight leading insurance firms have halted coverage at Nairobi Hospital following a sharp increase in treatment costs, some rising by up to 61 per cent for key services such as scans, ultrasounds, and bed charges.
The affected insurers include Madison Insurance, First Assurance, Minet, Old Mutual, Britam, AAR, CIC, and Pacis Insurance. They cited the new rates as unsustainable and a threat to the long-term affordability of care for their clients.
AAR Insurance announced it will suspend member access from August 11, stating that despite negotiations for a more sustainable cost model, no agreement was reached. CIC Group followed suit, indicating its suspension will take effect on August 12, noting that the revised rates could not be offset even with higher premiums.
Most suspensions are set to begin next week as talks between the hospital and insurers remain deadlocked.
