Farmers Empowered Through Value Addition and Climate Resilience Initiatives in Kitui West

Farmers in Kitui West Sub-County have received a major boost in their quest to improve productivity and income following a vibrant Farmers Field Day held at the Kitui West Sub-County offices Ndovoini- Kabati.

The impactful event, organized by the Catholic Diocese of Kitui highlighted transformative strides in the food value addition chain with strong emphasis placed on empowering local farmers.

The initiative, spearheaded by Project Lead Nicholas Mwandikwa in the Catholic Diocese of Kitui, forms part of the broader Building Community Resilience Against Climate Change project currently being implemented across Kitui and Makueni counties.

The program aims to equip farmers with practical skills and innovative solutions to withstand climate-related challenges while maximizing agricultural output.
The Field Day attracted a wide range of exhibitors, including agricultural experts, agribusiness stakeholders, and service providers, all showcasing modern farming technologies, products, and services tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers. From value addition techniques to Climate-Resilience farming practices, participants were exposed to critical knowledge designed to enhance both productivity and profitability.

Speaking during the event, Nicholas Mwandikwa emphasized the importance of empowering farmers beyond traditional farming methods. He noted that value addition remains a key driver in increasing farmers’ earnings and ensuring sustainability in the agricultural sector.

“This is a very important day for our farmers. It provides them with a platform to learn, interact, and adopt modern technologies that will not only increase their yields but also improve their livelihoods,” he said.

The event also served as a crucial networking platform, enabling farmers to connect directly with buyers, experts, and service providers, thereby opening up new market opportunities.

The gathering was graced by leaders from both the county and national governments, alongside church leadership led by Fr. Julius Muthamba of Kabati Parish. Their presence underscored the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in strengthening food systems and building resilient farming communities.

Church leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting grassroots development initiatives noting that agriculture remains a backbone for economic stability in the region. They encouraged farmers to embrace innovation and actively participate in programs aimed at improving food security.

As climate change continues to pose a threat to agricultural productivity, initiatives such as this Farmers Field Day are proving instrumental in equipping farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt and thrive.

The event ultimately stood out as a milestone in promoting sustainable agriculture, reinforcing the role of partnerships in driving meaningful change and inspiring farmers across Kitui West to embrace value addition and climate-smart farming for a more secure future.
