Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has lauded the government’s ongoing agricultural policy reforms, stating that they are beginning to show positive results across the country. Speaking during a development tour of Machakos County, Kindiki noted that initiatives such as the provision of subsidized fertilizer have significantly improved the productivity and earnings of farmers.
“Coffee, tea, and sugarcane farmers are now earning more from their daily efforts,” he said. “Dairy farming has also become more profitable, with milk prices now rising to a minimum of 50 shillings per litre.”
The Deputy President also announced the ongoing construction of 400 modern and fresh produce markets nationwide, aimed at creating secure and dignified business spaces for farmers and small-scale traders.
In Machakos County alone, 15 new markets are at various stages of development. Among them is the Machakos Town Modern Market, which is set to be constructed at a cost of KSh 450 million, and the Matuu Market, which will cost KSh 350 million.
Additionally, under the national last mile electricity connectivity programme, KSh 1.4 billion has been allocated to connect 6,500 new households in Machakos County to the power grid.
Kindiki also took part in an economic empowerment event supporting micro and small enterprises owned by women and youth in Machakos Town Constituency.
He was accompanied by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and several Members of Parliament including Caleb Mule (Machakos Town), Fabian Kyule (Kangundo), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala), Mwengi Mutuse (Kibwezi West), Tabitha Mutinda (Nominated Senator), Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), Sabina Chege (Nominated), and Betty Maina (Woman Representative, Murang’a). Members of the Machakos County Assembly led by Speaker Ann Kiusya were also present.
