Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. Highlights Makueni’s Municipalisation Progress as Senate Committee Commends County.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has highlighted Makueni County’s progress in operationalising municipalities, as the Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations commended the county for making significant strides in implementing the municipal framework.Appearing before the Senate committee in Nairobi today, Governor Mutula outlined the measures his administration has undertaken to strengthen the operations and development of municipalities across the county.Governor Mutula informed the committee that Makueni has operationalised three municipalities and allocated funds to support their operations and development, positioning the county among devolved units that have made notable progress in implementing the municipalisation framework.The Senate Committee, chaired by Wajir Senator Abbas Mohamed, acknowledged Makueni’s progress, noting that many other counties were still at the initial stages of operationalising municipalities.During the engagement, Governor Mutula called on the Senate to explore legislative mechanisms that would guarantee sustainable funding and adequate resourcing of municipalities.He noted that predictable and sufficient funding was essential in enabling municipalities to effectively discharge their functions and deliver services that respond to the needs of residents.Governor Mutula’s appearance before the committee provided an opportunity to showcase Makueni’s approach to strengthening devolved urban governance while also highlighting the need for a supportive legislative and financial framework to ensure municipalities operate effectively and sustainably.ENDS///…
