Farmers affiliated with Kalawa Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd benefited from a KSh 850,000 Drought Mitigation Enterprise Development Grant (EDG) provided under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).
The grant was presented by Livestock Chief Officer Japheth Kiminza during a ceremony held in Kalawa, Makueni County. The funding aimed to cushion dairy farmers against the adverse effects of the prolonged dry spell that followed the failed October–November–December (OND) rains.

Addressing farmers at the event, Kiminza stated that the funds would facilitate the purchase of quality animal feeds to help sustain milk production during the dry season and ahead of the next rains. He explained that the initiative sought to enhance dairy sector resilience by ensuring adequate livestock nutrition and safeguarding farmers’ incomes.

He further called on cooperative members to observe transparency and adhere strictly to the grant’s operational guidelines to guarantee effective utilization and accountability.

The intervention was expected to ease pressure on farmers who had been grappling with dwindling pasture and escalating feed costs. By supporting feed procurement, the program strengthened the cooperative’s capacity to maintain steady milk output and withstand climate-related challenges.
