Wiper Democratic Movement Party leader and former Vice President Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly announced that he will not attend this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled to be held at Ithookwe Showground in Kitui County.
Speaking during a community engagement forum in Mwingi West , Dr. Kalonzo stated that his decision was personal and based on what he termed as “principled reasons,” although he did not delve into specific details.
“I wish the people of Kitui and all Kenyans a peaceful and memorable Mashujaa Day, but I will not be part of the celebrations at Ithookwe,” Kalonzo remarked, drawing attention from political leaders and residents alike.
This year’s national celebrations, set for October 20th, will for the first time be held in Kitui County a region considered a Wiper Party stronghold. Preparations are already underway, with local leaders expressing optimism about the event boosting the county’s visibility and economy.
While Kalonzo’s absence may spark speculation in political circles, his statement was delivered with calm and dignity, avoiding any direct criticism of the organizers or government. Political analysts, however, believe the move could carry underlying political tones, especially as the country inches closer to the 2027 general elections.
Mashujaa Day is a national holiday dedicated to celebrating the struggles and sacrifices of Kenyan heroes, and this year’s event at Ithookwe is expected to draw thousands of citizens and dignitaries from across the nation.
Despite Dr. Kalonzo’s absence, preparations continue in full swing, with county officials and national government representatives ensuring that the event will proceed successfully and reflect the pride and heritage of Kitui County.
