Kitui County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto has confirmed the fatal shooting of two men and the injury of another in a violent incident along the Kitui–Tana River border, in the Malalani area of Kitui East constituency.
Addressing members of the press at his Kitui town office, Rutto said the victims aged 30 and 25 were reportedly charcoal burners attacked by unknown assailants believed to have crossed over from Tana River County. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has raised fears of escalating tensions along the border, an area often prone to conflict over natural resources.
“Police recovered spent cartridges from the scene, which will be subjected to forensic analysis to aid in tracking down the suspects,” Rutto revealed.
He strongly urged residents living along the volatile cutline to vacate the area immediately to avoid potential revenge attacks or further bloodshed.
Meanwhile, in a separate matter, Rutto also provided an update on the body of a middle-aged man discovered under the Kalundu bridge in Kitui Central. He confirmed that police had arrested a suspect in Mtinyani who was found in possession of the deceased’s mobile phone.
“The suspect has already been arraigned today at the Kitui Law Courts,” the commissioner confirmed, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the killing.
Commissioner Rutto assured the public that security agencies are on high alert and are working around the clock to ensure peace and justice prevail across Kitui County.
