Kitui, Kenya – February 19, 2025 – The Kitui County Government today officially launched the Little Angels Newborn Unit at Kitui Level 4 Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance neonatal care and reduce infant mortality in the county.
The new unit, equipped with modern incubators, phototherapy machines, and specialized neonatal beds, aims to provide life-saving care to premature and critically ill newborns. The project is part of the county’s broader efforts to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services.
Speaking at the launch, Kitui Governor Dr Julius malombe expressed optimism that the unit would significantly improve newborn survival rates.
“The launch of the Little Angels Newborn Unit marks a major milestone in our commitment to ensuring that every child born in Kitui gets the best possible start in life. This facility will provide specialized care for newborns who need extra medical attention, ultimately reducing infant mortality in our county,” the governor said.
The event was attended by county health officials, hospital administrators, medical professionals, and community leaders. The County Executive for Health, madam Ruth koki highlighted the importance of the facility in addressing challenges faced by newborns in the region.
“We have seen many cases where newborns struggle due to inadequate neonatal care. With this facility, we can now offer round-the-clock specialized treatment, ensuring that our babies get the medical attention they need,” koki said.
A mother who recently delivered at the hospital, mwende shared her gratitude, noting that the facility would have saved many lives in the past.
“As a mother, I am deeply grateful for this initiative. Many parents in Kitui have lost their babies due to a lack of proper newborn care. This unit will give hope to many families,” she said.
The county government has also announced plans to train more neonatal nurses and enhance medical supplies to support the new facility. Officials are working in collaboration with the national government and development partners to ensure the sustainability of the project.
