Kitui County Strengthens Healthcare Outreach Through Bicycle Initiative Expansion

Kitui County Government, in collaboration with the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) and World Bicycle Relief (WBR), convened a strategic meeting on Thursday to evaluate the effectiveness of the Community Health Promoter (CHP) bicycle program in Kitui South and Mwingi North sub-counties. The two areas achieved full bicycle distribution to CHPs, significantly boosting their outreach capacity.

The session, attended by CMMB CEO Dr. James Kisia and representatives from WBR, also focused on plans for the second phase of the project. This phase will extend bicycle distribution to CHPs in Mwingi Central and Kitui East, under a continued partnership with Governor Julius Malombe’s administration.

Looking ahead, phase three will aim to cover the remaining four sub-counties. The County Government will fund bicycles for two sub-counties, while CMMB and WBR will support the remaining two, ensuring full countywide coverage.

The initiative is designed to enhance the mobility of CHPs, enabling them to access remote households more efficiently and deliver vital health education and preventive services. Governor Malombe has championed the program as a pillar of his “Kitui Promise” agenda, emphasizing his commitment to improving affordable, community-based healthcare across the county.
