One person lost their life and three others were critically injured after a vehicle carrying ethanol went up in flames while the driver attempted to escape a police chase.
The fatal incident occurred at Makhokho Commercial Centre along the busy Kakamega-Kisumu highway. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the ill-fated vehicle was trying to outrun police officers who had signaled him to stop. In the process, he lost control of the vehicle, which struck a roadside barrier, rolled several times, and ignited on impact.
According to James Kisa, who witnessed the incident unfold, the crash left a trail of destruction and chaos. Among the injured were a boda boda rider and his passenger, who were caught in the ensuing inferno. All three survivors were rushed to Kakamega General Hospital in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident and the contents of the vehicle.
