The feedlot, to be established on 5,000 acres, is aimed at enhancing the production of high-quality beef. Meanwhile, the training institute, which will occupy 100 acres in Kanyonyoo, will specialize in courses on animal health, livestock production, range management, and value addition.

These initiatives, endorsed by the County Executive Committee on April 9, 2025, have already progressed to community sensitization and site visits, conducted on May 2, 2025.

PS Mueke highlighted that the projects are part of a broader national agenda to strengthen livestock value chains and open up economic opportunities for local communities.

Similar livestock training institutes are also planned for Migori, Nandi Hills, and Baringo counties. Additionally, the establishment of feedlots is underway in Baringo, Meru, and Wajir to provide consistent animal feed supply, enhance breed quality, and improve overall livestock health.

The national government aims to raise the livestock sector’s contribution to GDP from 12% to 20% through these efforts.

Kitui’s initiatives are expected to benefit neighboring counties including Makueni, Machakos, Wajir, Kwale, Garissa, Mombasa, Taita Taveta, and Lamu.
