A major political storm is brewing in Makueni County following explosive revelations that some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) are allegedly being influenced by external forces to initiate an impeachment motion against Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.
According to credible leaks from within the county corridors, a group of MCAs has been holding covert meetings with political operatives allied to prominent gubernatorial hopefuls ahead of the 2027 general elections. These meetings, reportedly held in Nairobi and Machakos over the past few weeks, have raised serious questions about the independence of the County Assembly and the integrity of the legislative process.
Sources familiar with the developments revealed that hefty incentives, including cash handouts and promises of campaign funding in 2027, have been offered to MCAs in exchange for their support in engineering a political coup against Governor Kilonzo Jr., who remains widely popular among residents for his infrastructural and health sector reforms.
“The impeachment agenda is not based on service delivery or accountability concerns. This is pure political sabotage driven by individuals who see Mutula as a stumbling block to their 2027 ambitions,” said one senior County official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Governor Kilonzo Jr., known for his calm but firm leadership style, has not yet issued a formal statement on the alleged plot. However, his allies have begun a counter-offensive, accusing the unnamed political hopefuls of undermining democratic institutions and sowing seeds of instability in the county.
“This is a reckless and dangerous game. We cannot allow the County Assembly to be turned into a puppet theatre for outside interests. We will resist this attempt to hijack the will of the people,” said one of , a vocal supporter of the governor.
Residents across Makueni have begun to weigh in, with many expressing outrage over the developments. Civil society groups and clergy have also called for transparency and calm, urging the County Assembly to remain focused on its oversight role and not be used as a pawn in succession politics.
The unfolding drama threatens to destabilize the county’s governance structure at a time when Makueni is positioning itself as a model devolved unit, with several nationally recognized development milestones under Governor Kilonzo Jr.’s leadership.
As pressure mounts, all eyes are now on Speaker Douglas Mbilu and the Assembly’s leadership to either confirm or deny the existence of an impeachment motion, and on investigative agencies to probe the allegations of external interference in county affairs.
