Makueni County is set to become a trailblazer in digital healthcare following Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.’s meeting on Thursday with key stakeholders to finalize plans for the launch of a transformative digital oncology platform at the Makueni County Referral Hospital (MCRH).
The high-level engagement brought together Sean Davis, Head of IT at Roche Foundation; Lucy Mithu, Head of Market Access & Government Affairs at Roche Kenya; Joy Kiguta from Savannah Informatics; and other partners from the health and tech sectors.
The digital platform jointly driven by Roche Kenya, the Savannah Global Health Initiative, and the National Cancer Institute of Kenya will revolutionize the cancer care journey by supporting early screening, accurate diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment survivorship.
Key features of the platform include:
A comprehensive digital cancer registry
Integrated Ministry of Health (MOH) reporting tools
Mobile-friendly screening modules
Offline access to support remote and rural health facilities
Governor Mutula welcomed the initiative, terming it “a bold step towards equity and innovation in cancer care.” He emphasized the county’s commitment to leveraging technology to bridge gaps in rural healthcare and boost early detection efforts.
“This digital platform is not just about data—it’s about saving lives. It empowers our health workers and strengthens community-based care,” said the Governor.
The upcoming launch builds on the success of a countywide cancer screening campaign conducted between February and April 2025, targeting cervical, breast, and prostate cancers. The campaign, supported by the Office of the First Lady Anita Mutula, was executed through an extensive network of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) who reached deep into villages to educate and screen residents.
Present during the deliberations were Executive Committee Member for Health Services Joyce Mutua, Chief Officer for Health Administration Dr. Harvey Mulei, and MCRH CEO Martha Munyao, among others.
The digital oncology platform is expected to officially launch later this year, marking a new chapter in the fight against cancer in Makueni County.
