Leaders in Mwingi Central are facing mounting pressure to dismantle illegal sand harvesting cartels accused of fueling violence and destroying rivers across the constituency.
Residents called on Gideon Mulyungi, Chief Officer Makau, and Mwingi Central MCAs to use their authority to end the unchecked sand trade that has reportedly led to killings and insecurity along major rivers. They urged the leaders to work closely with Enoch Kiio Wambua to restore order.
Illegal sand harvesting has caused severe environmental damage, including deepened riverbeds, falling water tables, drying boreholes, soil erosion, and destruction of aquatic life. Farmers are losing crops, families are struggling to access water, and public infrastructure near riverbanks is increasingly at risk.
Beyond environmental loss, the trade has empowered criminal networks while denying the county government legitimate revenue.
Residents now demand immediate crackdowns, strict enforcement of regulations, and sustainable sand management before the damage in Mwingi Central and Kitui County becomes irreversible.
