Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has challenged public sector leaders to embrace citizen centred governance, accountability and evidence based planning, presenting Makueni’s development experience as a model for transformative leadership. Speaking during the Leadership Programme for National Transformation (LPNT) at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, Kilonzo Jr. shared lessons with county secretaries, chief executives and other senior government officials on improving public service delivery.
Anchored in the county’s Andu Mbee (People First) philosophy, Makueni’s approach places citizens at the centre of development, with wards serving as key planning units for identifying priorities and monitoring projects. The governor highlighted the county’s health service delivery achievements and 151 strategic partnerships, while underscoring agriculture, market access and strategic land use as essential drivers of economic growth and poverty reduction.
Participants commended Kilonzo Jr. for sharing practical lessons on translating devolution into equitable development. He urged leaders to embrace innovation, strengthen partnerships and ensure public participation informs development priorities, emphasising that effective leadership should be measured by its impact on citizens’ lives.
